I know what you’re thinking. Why does a holistic therapist do spray tanning?! Well, let me tell you… I am very pale, and I learned at the tender age of 20 that I don’t tan very well. Sunbathe, burn, peel, and back to white, so I’ve used fake tan for years, and I never sit in the sun.
My spray tans are paraben free, cruelty free, and 100% vegan. They have the best quality DHA and contain skin loving ingredients to ensure your skin doesn’t dry out and cause cracking, also known as tiger bread skin! I predominately use rapid solutions which means no more sleeping in tans, unless you really want to…After spraying the rinse times are 1-2 hours – light, 2 – 4 hours medium and 4-5 hours is medium to dark. The shade very much depends on your skin type.
Before your session
Take a shower at least 3 hours before the appointment (12 hours is preferable)
Shave, wax, and exfoliate* the skin at least 24 hours prior to the appointment. It’s important to allow the amino acids to reconstruct as DHA needs amino acids to develop. Also, the pores need time to close before application, or it may leave dark spots.
Do not use oil based lotions, gel, wax, or shaving cream prior to tanning as they can leave resudue, which will prevent the tan from developing correctly.
Do not wear make-up, cream, sunscreen, perfume, or deodorant on the day of your appointment.
Moisturise the skin days prior to the session (not on the day of the appointment)
Application can be done with or without underwear, a swimsuit, or I supply paper pants.
Wear loose dark clothing for after your appointment. Pj’s and onesies are perfect.
* Exfoliation is THE most important step to achieving the best result that will last up to 10 days. Use a good quality scrub* and an exfoliating mitt* to ensure you remove all dead skin. Pay particular attention to rough areas like feet, ankles, elbows, armpits, knuckles, and collar bones.
Your tan can last anywhere between 6-10 days with proper prep and aftercare. This will also depend on how dry your skin is and how you take care of it. You should moisturise* every day, pat your skin dry after bathing, and avoid swimming pools and hot tubs (they contain chlorine, which will strip the tan). Avoid using Dove shower gels and body creams. They have ingredients in them that can cause the tan to develop unevenly and strip your tan prematurely.
After the session
Avoid activities that cause sweating. Avoid getting wet! If it’s raining, wear long covering clothes.
Do not apply cream or make-up during the development period.
If you are sleeping in your tan, wear long PJs.
After your development period, rinse the whole body and face thoroughly. Do not use any products in the shower. Make sure you rinse properly checking that you have no “run lines,” especially your legs. Do not apply any creams until the following day.
Moisturise* every day.
Excessive sweating, swimming pools, hot tubs, saunas, and taking long hot baths will cause the tan to fade quicker.
Use gentle facial cleansers. Products that contain retinol and tretinoin, exfoliating scrubs, etc will remove tan fast. I advise topping up face with a serum containing dha*
Avoid using products containing mineral oils, petroleum, and alcohol. These ingredients can affect the results and cause a faster fading.
